As For Me by Fools Of The Trade
Fools Of The Trade are a five-piece Texas Country band from Seguin, that could simply be classified as country in their musical style, though their music also embraces elements of rock and Americana. They have built up a sizable fanbase through playing a huge number of shows supporting Texas Country/Red Dirt acts and Fools of the Trade released their debut album Into The Storm in November, 2014.
This song, As For Me, is their debut single from that album, a mid-paced rock/country song that showcases Matt Smithey and the band’s fine songwriting abilities. Lyrically, it is a humble and romantic song with lead vocalist Travis Dearman singing about the harsh reality of married life, struggling to pay bills etc. Dearman has a strong, likeable voice which is joined on the chorus by Edie Smithey, and the male/female vocal blend singing in harmony works very well.
Fools of the Trade does a fine job with the chorus, which is about how he feels unworthy of his wife, who he feels could have done better, though he feels she is perfect for him. It is a sweet sentiment to convey in a song, and the overall melody goes perfectly with the words, the chorus is understated but memorable. The rest of the band all put in solid, quality performances with fiddle adding nicely to the instrumental blend.
Overall, this is a well-crafted and excellently performed song from a talented group who have everything necessary to go on and become a big force on the Texas/Red DIrt scene. Texas Country music is becoming increasingly popular through being combined with other genres, so with enough exposure, Fools Of The Trade could go on to become successful on a global scale in time.
