DSC Lonestar Outdoors Show

With your Host Cable Smith
Tune in to the No Bull Radio Network Saturday mornings from 8-9am
and again Sunday evening from 8-9pm.
Here is a summary of this week’s Lonestar Outdoors Show.
Hun photo Lion2_zps1ovsm9il.jpgting is Conservation. There is no better proof of this fact than the recent news out of Zimbabwe that wildlife officials will be forced to cull 200 lions from one area. Dallas Safari Club Executive Director Ben Carter joins the discussion to explain how exactly a once viable lion population, sustained by hunters and hunting dollars has been basically shut down. With hunters afraid to book lion hunts stemming from the “Cecil the Lion” backlash, the real loser here is the lions themselves. Pat yourselves on the back anti hunters, you’ve accomplished your goal- take away hunting, take away wildlife. Lets hope that science and sound wildlife management win out over this emotionally charged over reaction.
 photo Josh H Bass_zpsqnmlpvxx.jpg
Big Spring, Texas native Josh Helmstetler drops in next to discuss his recent state record catch. This 5.98 lb spotted bass shattered the old mark and helped Josh win the bass club tournament he was fishing that day. Known as an aggressive fish that with alot more fight than their bigger largemouth cousins, the spotted bass is native to many Texas lakes. Josh walks us through the events of that day leading up to his record catch and the ensuing nightmare of getting it weighed on a certified scale.

photo Mule Deer Relocation 2_zpsze0whdcn.jpgTexas Parks and Wildlife Mule Deer and Pronghorn Program Leader Shawn Gray then makes his return to the broadcast. After heading up the most recent relocation project, we get Shawn’s take on how our mule deer and pronghorn herds are doing on the West Texas landscape. We discuss the most recent relocation efforts for both species and how this efforts will be monitored and studied. (2 of 70 mule deer does being moved to the Black Gap WMA in West Texas).
 photo CareyThorn_zpsoehcykke.jpg
It’s that time of year, the dogwoods are blooming and everything is greening up, so we wrap things up by talking all things sand bass when longtime fishing guide Carey Thorn. Nobody has studied the white bass spawn like Carey and he has them patterned to a science. Carey tells us where to find them as they run up the creeks and rivers. We also pick his brain on line choice, baits for both live and artificial applications and even fly fishing for the big females who lay their eggs and then immediately return to the lake.

We get things started off by talking with the newly crowned Bassmaster Classic Champ-Edwin Evers. After bringing a 5 fish limit weighing 29.3 lbs to the final day weigh in, Edwin was able to claim his first championship and a $300,000 pay check in front of his hometown crowd in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His day 3 performance was one for the ages.

Next we are joined by U.S. Army Ranger Dave Hillary and Matt Klentzma- founders of Veterans Xtreme Adventures. I had the pleasure of hunting with these guys on a recent hog dogging outing and was able to see first hand how they use the Great Outdoors to get to the heart of what issues a Veteran might be dealing with. VXA is an amazing non profit and one that I am proud to be a part of.

photo turkey_bg_06_zpshj7ahmib.jpgWe round out the show by talking spring turkey with our Texas Parks and Wildlife Turkey Program Leader Jason Hardin. With the South zone opening on the 19th of March and the North Zone on April 2nd, longbeards are on every turkey hunter’s mind. Jason gives us an overview on what the rains of the past 12 months have meant for turkey production and what to expect in the woods this spring.

Lone Star Outdoors Show Dec 5

The Lone Star Outdoors Show is heard

at 9am Saturday and 8pm Sunday

on the No Bull Radio Network

Texas Parks and Wildlife Executive Director Carter Smith makes his return to the show this weekend. If you haven’t heard, TPWD recently acquired the 17,000 acre Powderhorn Ranch- an pristine and diverse stretch of coastline and oak flats along the Texas coast near Matagorda Bay. Carter talks about when the property will open to the public and how the agency raised $50 million dollars to fund the purchase. Designated to be a future WMA (Wildlife Management Area), Carter also discusses the diverse species available to hunters and anglers. This is the most expensive piece of property ever acquired by Texas Parks and Wildlife and it’s prime location makes it a true sportsman’s paradise.

Next, we check in with Ozona whitetail hunter Jeff Trout who recently had a surreal experience while sitting in a ground blind south of Ozona, TX. The 1,500 acre high fence lease has some great whitetails and axis deer on it, but to Jeff’s surprise it was a male mountain lion that busted out of the brush in pursuit of a deer during Thanksgiving week! Jeff breaks down what happened next and how he ended up putting this Texas big cat on the ground! The trail camera photo shows the tom just moments after Jeff’s first bullet grazed his back hip. The second shot found vitals and put the apex predator down for good!

 photo JeffTroutLion-Copy_zpsec1ba6ad.jpg

We then change things up with twin brothers Brent and Brian Jackson drop in with a big buck tale almost too far fetched to believe! Last year, Brent killed a Rusk County, TX free ranging monster with 22 points that grossed over 185 inches! Then, this fall Brian dropped a 22 point Rusk County bruiser of his own, not 7 miles from where Brent shot his buck last fall. What are the odds of two brother knocking down 22 point free ranging bruisers in back to back seasons? I’d probably buy a couple lottery tickets fellas!

We wrap up this week’s broadcast when everybody’s favorite- Captain Len Girard joins us live from Corpus Christi Bay for our Coastal Fishing Report. Flounder and redfish are on fire in addition to good numbers of trout and sheepshead with black drum starting to show up in good numbers as well. Captain Len tells us where to find ‘em and what to catch ‘em on! The results of a recent trip with Captain Len:

Deer Season Opens

Deer Season Opens Nov. 1

Texans still get excited with the approach of deer season, and for hundreds of thousands of hunters, this year Halloween night will be almost like Christmas Eve. The season for whitetail deer and turkey begins at 30 minutes before sunrise Saturday in both the North and South zones. It continues through Jan. 4, 2015 in the 209 counties in the North Zone and until January 18 in the 30-county South Zone. Legal hunting time for the day ends 30 minutes after sunset.

Texas game wardens will be out in force this weekend to make sure that those who head to the field hoping to harvest some fresh meat and maybe a good set of antlers not only obey all applicable laws but also get home safely.

The fastest way to pay more than you anticipated for the privilege to hunt is to head to your blind without a hunting license or not having taken a hunter safety course if you were born after 1971.
